Understanding the DOJ Election Monitoring
It is important to know what this monitoring means for our community:
-
Language Accessibility Focus: The DOJ monitors are tasked with observing compliance with the minority language provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Under federal law, jurisdictions with significant non-English speaking populations—such as Prince George’s County—must provide voting materials, instructions, and assistance in minority languages.
-
Routine & Federal Standard: Federal election monitoring is a standard compliance practice used across the country in jurisdictions required to offer language assistance or where limited observation data exists.
-
Strict Legal Rules: Plain-clothed monitors operate under federal and state rules. They are assigned to designated observation areas and are strictly prohibited from interfering with voters, communicating with voters inside polling places, or causing any disruption.
As Maryland State Administrator of Elections Jared DeMarinis emphasized, Maryland’s electoral process is verified, secure, and transparent—and every voter has the right to cast their ballot safely and without intimidation.
Help Protect the Vote: Become a Democratic Election Watcher
To ensure every resident in Prince George's County can exercise their constitutional right to vote smoothly, the Maryland Democratic Party’s Voter Protection Team—led by our own District 22 Delegate, Nicole A. Williams—is actively recruiting volunteer Election Watchers for Election Day.
As an Election Watcher, you will serve as a trained non-partisan observer on the ground, helping voters navigate questions, monitoring line lengths, and reporting any potential issues directly to the voter protection team.
Upcoming Virtual Training Sessions:
The Maryland Democratic Party is hosting a mandatory virtual training sessions to prepare all volunteers before Election Day this Sunday at 6:00 PM.
